Adding solar to your RV

I have been pondering weather to add solar panels to my rv or not. After extensive research I have decided to look at starting out with a 400 watt solar system. I started with trying out hooking up a 1500 watt modified sine wave inverter to my batteries to see if it would run my Vizio TV. The tv would do an initial start, but never came up 100%. The inverter was putting out 117 volts and running at 59.9 Hz. I tried running a 1500 watt ceramic heater and it would start it but the inverter went into trouble mode. I changed the heater to low which is 750 watts and it ran ok. With that I ordered a 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter which will be here later this week. I will update this page with the results after I run some checks with the new inverter.

Well, I received my 2000 watt power inverter and have it installed in my motorhome. The new one runs my tv just fine. The inverter runs at a steady 60 Hz. It was easy to install and came with a battery usage meter to let you know the state of your batteries. I purchased a 150 amp circuit breaker to put inline to protect the inverter. This setup is a temperary location for testing the system. I will be adding solar panels at a later date and are planing to relocate the inverter to an area with the rest of the equipment I install.

The solar panels that I am looking at are a 400 watt panel kit. I have to do more studying before this purchase.
